Finally had a chance to edit my shoot last weekend with Dayana from Ukraine, and my RFSG buddies. I have yet had a chance to process the films I used so in the meantime I'm trying the newly acquired Silver Efex Pro plug in for my Lightroom 3 to create a black & white film like effect. Its definitely interesting, but so far I still like how real B&W film look rather than a digital conversion.

Film is great and all that but here's a draw back. It took me months to develop this roll as I got a few frames left and I was too busy to shoot. Classic problem that drove me away to shooting digital. But, its also cool to see good results after forgetting it for a while. We found this four siblings in Kathmandu, Nepal, when we were exploring a courtyard not far from our hotel in Thamel. Very friendly and curious as most kids are in Nepal, they were excited when my friend pull out some sweets.

No matter how good digital black and white images are these days, nothing can replace the look of images on the good old silver halide based black and white film. I'm glad I got back into shooting film. Its not cheap or convenient, but sure worth all the trouble.

Got the opportunity to shoot Eva, a sweet Belarusian, with friends from RFSG (rangefinder singapore) community. Combining window lighting and simple light set up to fill in the shadows can really do wonders.

The decade long civil war in Nepal started by Maoist insurgents to overthrow the monarchy left a deep still have its residue even years after its resolution in 2006. All around Kathmandu you will see heavy security presence of armed police and army units. Not all are scary looking dudes with sticks, shotguns or oversized FN FAL rifles though.

One of the words that can describe Nepal, is colorful. While digital does a great job to capture it, film is just a different medium. Warm glow of a slide film really does justice to this country's beautiful mix of colors. My only regret is not taking enough of it during this trip.

Its been tough to have the energy or desire to shoot this past few months. That's why when a couple friends ask me to join them for a photo trip to Kathmandu, Nepal, I jumped at the chance. We had a great trip and it was very refreshing, but one thing struck me as I board my flight back to Singapore. A big group of people all with a huge I.O.M sticker on their chest was being escorted to the plane. All seem to be disoriented, seem to be flying for the first time in their life. On my last night in Kathmandu I met a Nepali friend who worked for WFP, a UN organization fighting world hunger. He told me about the work their doing in supporting Nepali Bhutanese refugees that fled Bhutan in the 80s and 90s after their citizenship were revoked. These stateless people then have to live in camps awaiting relocation to other countries. I realized that these are the same people that he was talking about. IOM actually stands for International Organization for Migration, that works with UNHCR to resettle refugees. I asked a guy in his 20s in the group, who were so busy making farewell calls to his friends. They were being resettled to Sydney with IOM's help. For them the long wait is over. As the Silk Air jet climbed over the Kathmandu Valley with the Himalayas in the background I realized how lucky I am not to have to go through their pain. I wish them well in starting a new life in Sydney.

My very first post in 2011. Why not pick a cool date to go with it. As usual with year end, work gets in the way of my photography. Another brutal week in the office which should be cautionary tale: don't let your kids grow up to be accountants =P. The only shots I manage to take so far this January is this, taken at a barbeque at 5pm on a Sunday, then go home to prepare for a call from my boss at 9pm. What a way to spend a weekend. Glad it's coming to an end.

This is a series of pictures taken during my roadtrip down California Route 1 between Pacifica, right outside San Fransisco , down to Carmel before having to switch to a highway due to time limitation. Even in this short stretch there are plenty to see and do, and I recommend at least a full week to drive leisure all the way down to San Diego.

Everywhere I go these days, I would bump into TV shoots using Canon's 5D mk II. It seems to be the new standard in HD video rig. A cousin of mine use it very successfully to shoot TV commercials, interestingly favoring using Nikkor AiS manual lenses . This one was a French crew shooting in New York's Time Square.

Protest Culture

One thing I noticed about Hong Kong is its protest culture. Walking around St Thomas Church I found a group of 4 people walking to the Central Government Offices shouting and carrying posters. A short walk to HSBC building, I found another loud group trying to shame bankers for what they perceive as corrupt business practices. Despite being a part of communist China, Hong Kong seem to respect free speech and its citizen clearly choose to exercise it.

Finally, portrait of a good friend. This thing might not be in mint condition as a lot of Leica collectors like their M cameras to be, but hell, I actually like the worn look. This Canadian built M is as good as their German cousins, still a solid performer. I love the uncluttered viewfinder with 35-50-90 framelines.

The first image was from my M4-2 while the rest are from the old trusty D200. I'm waiting for another roll to be developed. It is definitely challenging to use a film rangefinder for studio application. I tried to keep the balance of shooting 50-50 between RF and DSLR, and the keeper ratio is again on DSLR's side.
